  RANKED VOTING FAILS APPROVAL;
MAYORAL RESULTS DEMONSTRATE NEED

spacer
Fort Collins Ranked Voting Campaign Committee Co-Chairs Eric Fried and Seth Anthony released the following statement regarding the measure:

“We are grateful to the thousands of voters who supported the measure for ranked voting in municipal elections. Support crossed party lines and was widespread in the city, thanks to the effort of so many volunteers and supporters to educate and mobilize voters.

“The need for ranked voting in Fort Collins is clear, as no mayoral candidate received majority support in this election.  The majority of voters in this election clearly preferred a candidate other than the final winner.

A Vote FOR The Ordinance on

April 5, 2011 is a vote for...

  • Positive Campaigns
  • • Majority Winners
  • • Increased Voter Turnout
  • • No "Spoilers" or "Wasted Votes"

What's the Problem?

  • • 43% of city elections over the last decade have had three or more candidates
  • • In most of these, the winner fails to receive a majority
  • • Some elections produced a winner with as little as 29% of the vote

In our current system...

  • • Voters must game their vote for a 'winner', instead of voting their first choce
  • • Votes get split for candidates with similar views
  • • Candidates drop out to avoid 'splitting the vote.'

Ranked Voting will...

  • • Encourage Positive Campaigning
  • • Produce Majority Winners
  • • Eliminate Worry Over 'Wasted Votes' or 'Spoilers'
  • • Increase Voter Choice & Participation
